What is St. Dominic’s School?
We are a New York State approved program that serves students with special education needs in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade, as well as a high school Individualized Education Program (IEP). We are dedicated to providing a positive education environment for children whose social/emotional needs have interfered with their success in a traditional setting.
What kind of program does the school provide?
St. Dominic’s School is a therapeutic special education program which follows the New York State Standards for all subjects, adjusted to the skill level and abilities of the individual students.
Where do the students who attend the school come from?
Students come from school districts in Rockland, Westchester and Orange Counties, as well as New York City. They are referred to St. Dominic’s School by their local Committee on Special Education.
Why do students attend St. Dominic’s School?
Students come to St. Dominic’s School because their academic and social/emotional needs are not being met in the traditional setting. Our program offers a self-contained, individualized and therapeutic approach, which gives students the safety and consistency they need to achieve.
What grade levels do you serve?
We are approved to serve children from grades K – 9 in classes with a student/teacher ratio of 8:1:1. We also offer a high school program for students on an Individualized Education Program (IEP) track that is based on vocational development and independent living skills.
What types of disabilities/classifications does the school serve?
We are state approved to service children who are classified as Emotionally Disabled, Multiply Disabled, and Other Health Impaired.
How are children instructed in reading and math?
The students are instructed on their skill level and ability in the classroom. Reading is taught in collaboration with a reading specialist.
What is the school’s curriculum for science and social studies?
St. Dominic’s School follows New York State Standards and Curriculum for science and social studies, modified by the teacher to the student’s level and abilities.
Does every child have to attend the summer program?
While St. Dominic’s School provides a 12 month program, all students are not required to attend in the summer.
Where do the students go after they leave this program?
Our goal is to return the student to a less restrictive setting in their local school district. |
