In
the 1870's, Mother Mary Ann Sammon, a young immigrant from Ireland
who had embraced the life of a Dominican Sister, walked the teeming
streets of New York City. As she did she encountered so many children...
themselves immigrants, many orphaned and in need of a home and education.
In time, with enormous courage and few financial resources, Mother
Mary Ann, six other Dominican Sisters and nine little girls, traveled
north of New York City to Blauvelt, New York to found what is now
known as Saint Dominic's Home.
Today, more than 125 years later, in the legacy of Mother Mary Ann
Sammon, the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt and their more
than 800 co-workers continue to face the enormous problems of children
and families seeking shelter, education and nourishment of mind
and heart.
We now provide foster care boarding homes to more than 300 children
each year. At our Early Childhood Centers, we offer a Pre-K education
for delightful four year olds eager to learn. Through Special Education
Programs, we offer enlivening educational opportunities to children
at Saint Dominic's School and TORCH (our therapeutic Pre-School).
Our community residences provide shelter for adolescents who need
psychiatric care or supervision. Therapeutic residential programs
offer a caring environment for adults suffering with mental illness
or with developmental disabilities. Community- based services help
families stay united through counseling and preventive programs.
The financial support of our generous donors allows us to sponsor
the programs and services of Saint Dominic's Home and to care for
more than 2,000 children, adolescents and adults in New York City
and the Lower Hudson Valley region. With your financial support,
we can continue this great and courageous work on behalf of the
children of Saint Dominic's. Please join us today with a generous
donation by check or credit card, a bequest, or gifts by will, trust
or life insurance. Thank you.
