ONE OF OUR OWN MAKES
FRONT-PAGE COVERAGE
Ellen Rice, a Leisure Arts Instructor in the Saint Dominic's Home
Developmental Disabilities
Program, was recently featured on the front page of The Journal
News, a large Gannett-owned daily newspaper in Rockland County, N.Y.
(lohud.com).
The story profiled Ellen's life-long commitment to helping those
less fortunate than her, despite her own physical disability. When
Ellen was five years old she had a tragic accident falling from an
automobile onto the pavement which caused her brain damage. From
that day on, Ellen lost some of her motor skills. For most of her
life she has walked with a cane and three years ago her debilitating
condition has forced her into a motorized scooter. But it hasn't
slowed her down.
Having motor skills damage has prepared her for a life-long career
she loves and that is working with people with developmental
disabilities. For nearly three decades Ellen has been working for
Saint Dominic's Home, first as a Residential Counselor and now as a
Leisure Arts Instructor. She feels that the consumers she serves,
many of whom have more severe disabilities, have a unique respect
for her and look up to her because she is like them.
STUDENTS PRESENT A
SHOWCASE OF TALENT
BLAUVELT, N.Y., June 1,
2007 --The gymnasium at Saint Dominic's School was transformed into
a showcase of talent as more than 40 students took part in a morning
of song and musical performances. Proud parents and family members,
faculty and staff and fellow students packed the "music hall" and
cheered on their talented sons and daughters and loved ones,
students and classmates. Live performances ranged from solos, trios
and groups singing to piano, keyboard, guitar, bass guitar and drums
and percussion. The showstopper was a riveting number by a group of
students and their teacher playing a harmonious number on plastic
chairs.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE THROUGH SONG
BLAUVELT, N.Y -- Saint Dominic's School students lifted the spirits
of a group of adults with developmental disabilities at Farrell Hall
on the campus of Saint Dominic's Home in Blauvelt during an
impromptu concert of classics, oldies and popular songs. Saint
Dominic's Home operates the K-8 school for children with emotional
and behavioral challenges and runs a day recreation program for
persons with developmental disabilities. Because of their close
proximity, the students often get the unique opportunity to
entertain the adults.
