Saint
Dominic's Early Childhood Centers, located in the South Bronx,
give active and curious 4 year olds an exciting opportunity
to develop socially, emotionally and intellectually. National studies
confirm that children educated in basic skill development in the Universal
Pre-K program have a stronger foundation as they begin the next steps
in their formal learning. Play activities at the Centers engage the
children in developing pre-reading and pre-math skills, as well as
modeling socialization. Art and music play projects encourage creativity
and an understanding of such values as sharing and conflict resolution...
all valuable life-skills.
This
community-based program responds to an effort to assure that all children
in New York have an opportunity for quality early childhood
education. Opened
to children and their families in the South Bronx in 1998, Saint Dominic's
Early Childhood Center and the John T. White Early Childhood Centers
- both Universal Pre-K Programs, are historic. This was the first
time the New York Department of Education contracted with non-public/private
agencies to provide a regular school program. In 2005, Saint
Dominic's John T. White Early Childhood Center was recognized as one of
three exemplary UPK Programs in Region 2.
In June 2006, the
Saint Dominic’s Home John T. White Early Childhood Center was awarded
accreditation from NAEYC, the National Association for the Education of
Young Children. NAEYC, the nation’s leading organization of early
childhood professionals, accredited the program for five years. Only 8%
of the nation’s early childhood programs have received this honor.
