Board Member Spotlight: Sister Margaret Flood
We begin with the President of the Saint Dominic’s Home Board of Directors Sister Margaret Flood. Throughout her busy life as an active registered nurse and executive administrator, Sister Margaret Flood has found the time to serve on the Board of Saint Dominic’s Home for 29 years -- the past four years as President. Like most nursing students today, Sr. Margaret began nursing school just after completing high school in the Bronx where she was born and raised. After her first year, she left school to join the Blauvelt Dominicans. When she was a "Junior Professed" she returned to finish her nursing degree. Her early years in the community were spent as a nurse in Jamaica. She returned to the States and continued practicing nursing until she was elected to the Leadership Team. She spent eight years in Leadership, and then worked in the areas of social responsibility and again in nursing. Her concern for patients, their care, and the cost of medical care led her to work for the Dominican Sisters Family Health Service (DSFHS), which provides home health care, social, personal and pastoral services for patients. Sr. Margaret has worked at DSFHS for 16 years and is currently the Chief Operating Officer. She received her RN degree from St. Vincent’s, a BSN from Columbia, a Masters from NYU, and an MPA from Baruch College. When she first found out about the Dominicans, Sr. Margaret thought they were mostly about teaching and social work. However, Sr. Margaret was inspired by a painting of St. Catherine of Siena, the Patron Saint of Nurses, feeding a leper. This painting, of which Sister Margaret is particularly fond, helped her to make the connection between the Dominicans and health care -- especially care of the most poor and vulnerable. Health care and religious life run in the family. Sr. Mary Flood, a doctor, is Sr. Margaret's younger sister. Sr. Margaret said it was the mission of Saint Dominic’s Home and its dedicated staff that drew her to become involved in the agency and has kept actively working on its behalf for three decades. “I am constantly amazed by the ability of Saint Dominic’s Home to adapt to the times and meet financial constraints all the while never wavering from its high level of care and services to meet the changing requirements of children and adults in need,” she said. Sr. Margaret is grateful for the time and dedication of her fellow Board members who provide their experience and expertise to help ensure the mission of Saint Dominic’s Home can continue to be relevant today and in the future. On her time off, Sr. Margaret enjoys traveling, reading and staying on top of current events. But, she always has the urge to reach out to help people in need.
